Subject: KAM TNC birdie fix at 145.610 The following KAM birdie fix is from N1MEN DE Mark and eliminates the unsquelchable noise at 145.610. In ALL KAMs (not the KPC3 or others), there is a cap on the motherboard that is designated C49. It is in the left front side of the board if the boards front panel is facing you. The cap is located next to a small crystal. It is clearly marked on the motherboard C49. The value of this cap, depending on the age of your KAM can be either .27 picofarads or .33 picofarads. The original KAMS had the .27 and the latter had an updated .33 cap installed instead. The .33 was "supposed" to cure the birdie problem, but usually didn't. The fix is to remove the .27 or .33 pf cap and replace it with either a 8-50 pf variable (I didn't have one and couldn't find one), or replace it with a value of cap other than the .27-.33 in your KAM. If you use a variable, then just tweak it until the birdie disappears. If you opt for the fixed value cap, experiment until the birdie flies away. This fix does NOT apply to KPC-3's. This fix will not affect internal clock speeds. Y
