Bulletin: KN1001 Vendor: Kenwood TH-78A Subject: Expanded RF Range This mod will open uo the 300 and 800MHZ receive frequency range and enable the crossband repeater function. 1) Disconnect the antenna and battery 2) Remove 4 screws, 3 on the back and 1 on the left side and open the case. 3) Locate the PC area covered by a brass shield in the front half of the radio. Along the edge you will see a row of 6 diodes vertically on the PC board. Newer units have two jumper wires extending from the same area in the area around D4 and D5. 4) If you have a newer unit with the two jumpers cut both jumpers in half. On the older units without the jumpers you must remove diodes D4 and D5. Removing D4 or the jumper in series with D4 will allow cross band operation. Doing the same with D5 will enable the expanded RF range. 5) If you need to remove the diodes be careful not to damage the other circuits and if you removed the brass shield replace it making sure nothing else is shorted out. 6) Reassemble the radio and be careful of the small O-rings sealing the two LED's. 7) Reset the radio's microprocessor, see user manual. 8) To select the 300 & 800MHZ ranges press [F] key for 2 seconds the the [BAND]. To turn ON/OFF the cross band repeater function press [F] and [0].
