Bulletin: YA4833 Vendor: Yaesu Subject: Yaesu FT51R mod FT-51R Extended Range Modification Save your memory before you start. Use the clone feature/PC program. Remove power and all screws to the unit. Total of 7 screws. These are: 1- battery release slide, 2 and 3- inside battery compartment just left and right of the 4 battery pack contacts, 4,5,6, and 7- inside battery compartment behind the numeric keypad. 1. Carefully lift the L type battery plastic cover. 2. There is a big surface mount CPU in the top left corner below the battery release slide. To its right there are 7 jumpers (JP1001-JP1007). Lay out is sort of like this: ------- | | <> JP1001 | cpu | <> <> JP1003 JP1002 | | <> <> JP1005 JP1004 -------- <> <> JP1007 JP1006 The solder pads are half moon shapes. 3. The american version of this radio has jumpers on JP1001, JP1006, JP1007. 4. Your job is to unsolder JP1006 so only JP1001 and JP1007 have solder. 5. Use a GOOD soldering iron and good solder wick. 6. To add tone burst add solder to JP1004. 7. Put radio back together and reset it (press and hold UP/DOWN arrow keys at the same time while you turn radio on). 8. You can toggle amateur on/off by pressing the arrow keys and turning it on. 9. Coverage is: 110-180RX, 420-470RX, 140-174TX, 420-170TX. You all know the rules regarding transmission out of the amateur band! The above was derived from Yaesu technical support document dated 12/8/94.
