THE SIMPLE ATV STATION The myth that ATV is much to complicated for the average amateur is just that.... a myth. In the past it was often difficult to obtain the necessary equipment to assembly a station that didn't require lots of floor space and major stock in the local power company. Today the key elements to a simple ATV station can be found in most every home. With the advances in home video, VCRs, color TVs, and even camcorders are now part of many households. These items are the "television" part of the ATV station. All that remains is the transmitter, downconverter and an antenna. ATV transmitters and converters are now readily available in kit form or assembled from several sources. A basic cable tv converter can also be used to tune the standard ATV channels. A preamp is necessary in this instance, however. As in any UHF system, the antennas is very important to your success. Get it as high and clear of obstructions as possible. At UHF, communications is primary line-of-site. Good quality is standard UHF practice. If you have an ATV repeater in your area, you may well be able to access it with a typical 1-2 watt ATV transmitter. For point-to-point ATV work a linear amplifier is most often required. So now its up to you to be seen as well as heard. Its easy and its fun.
